Macular degeneration is a condition that occurs in older patients that causes the deterioration of the macula. The macula is the central area of the retina that controls your visual acuity. Deterioration of this area can cause a build-up of retinal waste in your retina leading to symptoms such as swelling, bleeding, scarring and blurry vision. There is no cure for macular degeneration, but we can recommend a combination of vitamins, minerals and injections that will benefit you greatly as well as low vision aids and compensatory strategies to help maintain your independence.
Spectral-Domain OCT monitoring allows us to enhance the look of your retinas via 3-D imaging. This allows one of our eye doctors to detect changes in the accumulation of retinal waste (drusen), the thinning of the retinal pigment epithelium (atrophy), accumulation of fluid or blood under your retina (neovascularization), and scarring from abnormal blood vessels. If negative changes are observed, then we may need to alter your treatment regimen.
