EX-PRESS® Mini-shunt was developed to streamline and standardize the traditional trabeculectomy procedure for glaucoma. A small metal shunt is placed leading from the anterior chamber to the space under a flap in the white of the eye, so that the pressure in the eye is relieved when the fluid flows out through the shunt and into a reservoir under the conjunctiva (the clear membrane on the white of the eye). From here, the fluid is resorbed back into the patient’s bloodstream. The EX-PRESS® device makes the surgery quicker and somewhat more predictable than a traditional trabeculectomy. The procedure may be performed at the same time as cataract surgery but more commonly is a stand-alone procedure.
