Refractive Lens Exchange (ReLEx)

For patients who may not be candidates for LASIK or PRK, due to the severity of their glasses prescription, dry eye, corneal disease, age, etc., refractive lens exchange may be an option. It is the same procedure as cataract surgery, but in the absence of a cataract. Refractive lens exchange can correct larger amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia (“old-sightedness”) than traditional refractive surgery. Premium lens implants may be placed to provide multifocality or extended depth of focus. This is particularly appropriate in patients who have reached the age where the need for reading glasses or bifocals has become problematic, but who have not yet developed a cataract.

Refractive lens exchange is not covered by insurance. Our physicians and counselors will help you decide if it is appropriate to your eyes and your lifestyle.
